NO More Socks For Christmas!

Thursday, September 2nd, 2010

How many times have you gone Christmas shopping and tried to look for an interesting and unique gift for your dad, uncle or granddad and the best that you’ve been able to come up

No one wants SOCKS for Christmas :(

No one wants SOCKS for Christmas :(

with a pair of Simpsons socks?

When I was a kid my mum used to take us Christmas shopping in mid November. Her main reason for this was that she did not want to brave the Christmas rush when Decemeber came. Now I’m older and wiser I understand why. People go crazy. I’m one of these people who start mid November too, at least the planning of the presents anyway. I usually know what I want to get people, nowadays however I do the majority of my Christmas gift shopping online; just because it’s easier. With online shopping there is a lot more choice I think at Christmas because I feel you can think outside the box. For example I know some people who instead of buying the standard Christmas Gift of festive candles and scented gift packs (Boots and other places sell those perfume sets – I actually love those) they bought their boyfriend a ‘track day’ with Ferrari. That is certainly better than a pair of socks, but for a gift like that you really need to have the budget to be able to buy them.

I think before you start your Christmas present shopping you need to do a few things:

1) Decide who you are buying gifts for. For me it would be my close family (so we’re talking my mum, dad, sister, grandparents x2, my cousin with whom I spend large amounts of time, my aunt and uncle who spends every Christmas with us and boyfriend) and friends (for my it would be my two best friends – guy and girl). As you can see from my list I have 11 people to buy for. Now I know that I can move onto the next point….

2) Sharing the present burden. Me and my sister have a habit of sharing the Christmas present buying. She’ll buy for my dad and I’ll buy for my mum and both of us will go halves on the presents for our grandparents etc. At Christmas your purse strings are probably stretched to the max so having someone to help you out with the Christmas shopping is a real life saver!

3) Now you know who you are buying for, who you are sharing the gift buying with – you can decide on your budget. My BIGGEST and possibly the most vital piece of information that I can give you is this; decide on a budget and stick to it. You know how much you earn, you know how much you can afford. The amount of people I know who put all their Christmas expenses on their credit card and are then paying for it for the whole of the next year. DON’T DO THIS. A realistic budget will help you buy great gifts rather than good gifts because you’ll take the time and effort to research the kind of gift you want to get someone.

4) DON’T LEAVE IT TILL THE LAST MINUTE. Alot of shops hike the prices up on gifts just before Christmas, when you go back in the January sales and you see the new price of something you’ll be horrified at how much you paid during the festive period.

So those are the most important things to remember before you start your Christmas shopping. Once you’re ready to start and you want to start thinking outside the box so you don’t end up buying ’socks’ (or something similar)…. so here are a couple of suggestions that you might want to consider before you start:

1) Engraved Champagne Flutes – I write about these alot in my posts. I know I do. But there is good reason for this. Recent trends in our own sales show that people love them, they are a unique gift that is perfect for celebration. Alot of people by engraved champagne flutes as wedding gifts, but I think that they although they make great wedding presents they also are fantastic for Christmas. What could be better than getting a set of personalised champagne flutes on Christmas day, especially if you are in a couple. Christmas is a time for celebration, you could wake up on Christmas morning, open your presents and toast in Christmas in your brand new personalised champagne flutes! Celebrate this happy day in style! So yes, I am an advocate of personalised champagne flutes, for a number of reasons – not only are they great for celebration (everyone loves to toast with champagne) but the personalisation makes them even more appealing. Personalised messages give that thoughtful and sentimental touch to any gift.

2) Personalised Champagne – so if you are buying someone a set of champagne flutes then you should really buy them a bottle of personalised champagne to go with it. Just like champagne flutes, personalised champagne has that wow factor. It is a classy gift that is perfect for Christmas. As I mentioned earlier people love to toast Christmas in and what could be better than doing it with a bottle that was given as a Christmas present? Again it’s a simple yet thoughtful gift, and it certainly isn’t a pair of socks.

3) If you are looking for gift for your dad, granddad or uncles (socks is usually the norm), then why not think about the following as a great gift for Christmas? – the following being a pair of engraved cufflinks. Every man wheres cufflinks at some point in their life. So whether they use them at New Years Party or 10 years down the line, a set of engraved cufflinks will last a life time! Personalised lighters, engraved whisky and vodka are also great Christmas Gifts too.

BE ORIGINAL.

North American Wedding Traditions

Wednesday, July 28th, 2010

I realise that alot of the posts that I have written over the past few weeks have been about weddings, but alot of the reason for that is that I know alot of people who are getting married this year. So if I know alot of people who are getting married then I am almost certain that so do you as well. I just thought you might like some tips on all things wedding related. Don’t worry Christmas is coming soon and I certainly have alot to write about that particular theme. I’m excited already!!

I’ve spoken alot about the different traditions that people have when they plan a wedding, but I don’t think I’ve looked at it from the perspective of a western wedding.

North America has many cultures and many different wedding traditions influenced by countries all over the world. Mexican wedding traditions, for example, have been influenced by Spain and France, and by their own ancient cultural traditions stretching back to the Aztecs. Wedding traditions in the United States have been influenced by virtually every country at some point or other, making for a rich and varied combination of traditions. Canadian traditions are strongly influenced by both the English and the French.

Mexico
In Mexico, it is usual for a white ribbon or a rosary, called a lasso, to be draped around the necks of the bride and groom during the vows. This is to symbolize the joining together of the couple. Another tradition is for the groom to give his bride thirteen gold coins during the ceremony, symbolizing his commitment to support his new wife financially. As the bride and groom leave the church, red beads are thrown at them for good luck. And at Mexican wedding receptions, the guests form a heart-shaped circle around the bride and groom as they have their first dance as husband and wife.

United States of America
One unusual American tradition is for brides to wear white gloves. This comes from Victorian times, when American brides wore white gloves as symbols of modesty and romance. Even today, many American brides wear white gloves as a romantic gesture. In the United States today, it is very common for the bride and groom to write their own wedding vows, making promises and commitments that are individual and personal to them as a couple. Today’s wedding ceremony in the United States is often very grand and elaborate, especially among the well off, but small ‘backyard’ weddings are also common. If the climate allows, many wedding ceremonies are held outdoors.

Wedding ceremonies in North America traditionally conclude with the bride and groom exchanging wedding rings, and then, of course, with the traditional wedding kiss, which seals their union in front of their friends and family. As the newly married couple leave the wedding ceremony, rice is thrown at the couple as a symbol of fertility.

North American Wedding Gifts
Wedding gifts are traditionally given to help the new couple set up home together. They can range from the practical to the highly decorative. For more affluent weddings, personalised gifts of champagne, crystal and silver are ever popular. Those in poorer areas often make the bride and groom a personalised present symbolising their friendship.

Personalised gifts are a great way to show the happy couple what you want for their lives together. If you gave them a personalised photo gift. For example a personalised photo frame with a photo of the two of them in it and a message that you have had engraved into the frame then that is a very sentimental gift. Not only are you giving them something that they can display in their home. But the engraving shows that you want their marriage to last… that is the sentiment anyway.

Wedding Entertainment

Wedding Entertainment

Wedding gifts and wedding favours can be overrated at times, especially on the wedding day when there is so much going on! There are so many great ideas for wedding entertainment you’ll be spoiled for choice…

Arrival Of The Bride
At the point when the bride’s big day begins, it is great to have some wedding entertainment to greet you as you step out of the wedding car. Some ideas of lavish entertainment includes a Highland Piper, a Spanish Guitarist or Minstrels.

As The Guests Arrive
For a great atmosphere, it’s a good idea to have some form of music during the arrival of the guests and also during the signing of the register (if you have chosen to make this a formal event). You could simply choose some suitable music and arrange for it to be played on a CD player or the venue’s sound system. Or you could make the wedding entertainment extra special by having a Harpist, a Vocalist, a Cello Duo or even a String Quartet to entertain the guests if you have the budget. This can work in either a church or civil ceremony. Remember that for a civil ceremony the music cannot usually be religious in nature and the registrar will want to see and approve your music choices in advance.

Champagne Greeting
As well as musical entertainment, it’s a good idea to have some wedding champagne on tap to greet the guests as they arrive. Personalised wedding champagne is a great way to make your wedding special – this can also be used for the toasts. Why not buy some engraved flutes for the bride and groom as their gift, which will help them remember their special day long after the guests have gone home?

The Wedding Breakfast
During the wedding breakfast it is important that any musical entertainment is low-key and provides simply a background atmosphere – no one wants to have to shout above a energetic jazz band, especially first thing in the morning! Save the lively entertainment for the evening festivities where everyone can enjoy it. You could, however, engage the services of a magician or a caricaturist to wander among the tables and keep the guests amused. If possible, have a toastmaster present – many civil ceremony venues provide one if the numbers are large enough. He will give you advice on wedding etiquette and keep everything running smoothly.

Children’s Entertainment
If there are a fair number of children at your wedding you should organise some children’s entertainment. Things like magicians, clowns and face painters are popular, or if you have room and weather for it, you could hire a bouncy castle too.

The Evening Reception
The kind of wedding entertainment you organise for your evening reception will depend upon the atmosphere you are trying to create. For a lively party, go for a recommended DJ, or a combination of a DJ and a band. If you are after something more refined you could opt for a jazz band, a classical vocalist or a folk group.

Whatever entertainment you end up going with, make sure you as the bride and groom enjoy your special day and make plenty of toasts with champagne!

Why is Cava called Cava? Why is Asti called Asti? Why is Champagne called Champagne?

Tuesday, June 15th, 2010

There are a number of different sparkling wines out on the market. When giving gifts, some people will only give as champagne gift as they do not think that the other sparkling wines out there are any good. However what you should remember is that champagne is only produced in one region of the world and there is a monopoly on the word champagne. It’s been ingrained into our minds that champagne is the best, and yes in most cases it is. But sometimes it is worth looking at the other options that are out there and not just go for a champagne gift. A top of the range Cava, which tastes beautiful… is probably the same price as a bottle of cheap bubbly; if I’m honest I know which one I would prefer.

Cava is the Spanish equivalent of champagne and it is the name of a type of Spanish white or pink sparkling wine, produced in different areas of Catalonia, Navarra, Rioja, Andalucia, Valencia and Extremadura.

The word “Cava” originates from the Greek term used to refer to a “high end” table wine and it comes from the Latin word “cava” which in English means ‘cave’. In the early days of cava production caves were used in the process of aging and preserving wines. The production of cava began in 1872 by Josep Raventós. At this the time vineyards of Penedès had been devastated by the phylloxera plague, and the predominantly red vines were being replaced by large numbers of vines producing white grapes. After seeing the success of the Champagne region, Raventós decided to create the dry sparkling wine that has become the reason for the region’s continued success. In the past the wine was referred to as Spanish Champagne, however due to the prohibition by EU Law, no sparkling wine that comes from anywhere other than the champagne region in France can be called champagne.

Asti otherwise known as Asti Spumante is the white sparkling wine that is produced in an area to the south of the town of Asti in Piedmont, Italy. The wine is made from the Moscato Bianco grape, this wine is served with dessert as it is sweet and low in alcohol. It retains its sweetness through a complex filtration process. Another wine called Moscato d’Asti is made in the same region from the same grape, but produced by another technique which differentiates it from Asti.

Champagne is the only wine legally sanctioned by EU law to be called champagne. It is produced in the champagne region of France by the Méthode Champenoise. Champagne is produced as follows first there is the primary fermentation (The process of fermentation of wine is the catalyst function that turns grape juice into an alcoholic beverage) and bottling, a second alcoholic fermentation occurs in the bottle. This secondary fermentation is what gives champagne the sparkly bubbles!

As you can see from this discussion there are a number of sparkling wines available, champagne being the most luxurious of all! But… what you should remember that if you are buying a gift for someone then you do need to consider your budget. All these sparkling wines mentioned above taste wonderful and are luxurious in their own right. So if you can’t afford a champagne gift then why not consider going for a sparkling wine gift option? They are just as good as a champagne gift.

Do you like to celebrate your birthday?

Thursday, May 27th, 2010

I’ve spoken to many people in my life who have felt that birthdays are just another day and they would rather not celebrate them. When I ask them why I get an number of answers:

“I think it depends on who you are. Some people do not like to be reminded of how old they are and some religions do not celebrate birthdays.”

“I don’t know why we bother celebrating, it’s just another year older. If it were up to me, I’d just have a few friends over, eat some cake, and kick them out, end of story, nice quiet little get-together sounds much more appealing to me.”

“I only think certain birthdays should be celebrated….1-10, 12, 13, 16, 18, 21, 25, 30, 40, 50, 65 – the rest are just a reminder that you’re older”

If you notice these comments all seem to revolve around age, and the idea of getting older. Not the idea of celebration. People don’t like to think about getting older; the older we get the more we want to forget our birthdays. But is that the right attitude to take? I heard someone once say that “everyday above ground was a day to celebrate” and you know what, that person was right. The fact that you’ve gotten a year older doesn’t mean that you are a year closer to death, it means that it is another day to celebrate because you’ve made it to that birthday. I’m one of these people that love to celebrate their birthday…. it’s a day that is special and all about me. But I can appreciate that some people don’t like to. They would rather forget about it because they honestly do think that it’s another down and a year closer to when they are going to die. Life is short, we know this. So why spend our time worrying about when our life is going to end and instead concentrate by making the most of it and celebrating any chance we get. Birthdays are the perfect example of this.

If you know someone who doesn’t like to celebrate their birthday then maybe you should consider why they don’t. What has happened in their life they makes them dislike their birthday…. do they have no one to spend it with, is no one making a fuss of them, has their birthday been forgotten in the past? All these things can lead to a person really not being happy about getting another year older. You need to help them break the cycle. And what better way than getting them a fantastic birthday present to show them how much you care about them. You want to help brighten up their day and a thoughtful gift may just be the way to do it. What is more thoughtful than a personalised birthday gift? Have you ever received a personalised gift before? I tell you something everyone that I have given something personalised to has loved it. You know why, because it is a one of a kind gift…. no one else has anything like it in the world. Take for example engraved champagne flutes, there are very few people who would own an engraved flutes set. You could personalised that gift with the name of the recipient and a special message that means something between the two of you. Or you could couple the engraved champagne flutes with a bottle of personalised champagne. You could personalise the bottle with a unique message, possibly by designing the champagne label or by getting a bottle of engraved champagne? That’s my favourite, a bottle of engraved champagne and a set of engraved champagne flutes to create a really fantastic champagne gift set. That is the kind of gift you’d want to display in your display cabinet. So that everytime you looked at it, it reminded you of the person who bought it for you.

The best way therefore to make a person want to celebrate their birthday is to give them a reason to want to celebrate, and often a well thoughtout birthday gift will do the trick!

Celebrate Fathers Day With That Personal Touch

Tuesday, May 25th, 2010

As a kid do you remember being carried on your dad’s shoulders or playing games with him? (One of my fondest memories of my and dad is one winter when it snowed heavily and while coming home from school we had a snowball fight). Have you got any special  memories growing up of the times he really made you laugh or gave you a great big surprise? – like say a new bike or tickets to go and see your favourite band? Celebrating the personal things; the memories and experiences you shared together and getting a bit sentimental is what Fathers Day gifts is all about. The purpose of a gift is to put a smile on someone’s face so it makes sense that it should be as personal as possible. The more personal a gift, the happier it should make the recipient! People like that personal touch when it comes to gifts.

Cherishable Items – those priceless and sentimental gifts.

You’re dad might be really hard to buy for. Some father’s are. Well I know mine is, I’m often left racking my brain trying to decide what to get him for Father’s Day. Do not get stuck trying to work out what to get your dad. If you think back to yesteryear when you were back in school, to the things that you probably took him home such as wonky clay sculptures and glitter covered paper (what use is glitter covered paper – but I’m sure your dad was so excited to receive it, because it was a gift from you!) you should already know or you will soon realise that what he wants more than anything is just to know you care, your dad will never ask you say thank you for the things he has done for you. After all that is his job, he is your dad, but sometimes I’m sure he’d like it to be acknowledged that he’s given up his weekends to drop you off and pick you up from football practice or ballet lessons.. It is the amount of effort you make and the amount of thought you put in to his gift that matters, not how expensive or impressive it might seem on the surface. The important thing is that you’ve thought about your dad and that’s all he cares about.

Fathers love items that say something personal just as much as mothers do. So when you write a card or gift tag, do not be afraid to tell him you care. He may act all macho but he is a big softy at heart.

Useful Gifts

Dads adore useful gifts such as personalised calendars and personalised mugs for Father’s Day Gifts because they serve a purpose. A card is nice but after it has been read and displayed then it is usually recycled! Mugs with his name on, personalised whisky bottles personalised with a message, or a personalised calendar that can remind him of important dates (such as your birthday!), are so much better than just a card. A card can be a great way to say you love him too however. So don’t forget the card when you are sorting out his present!

If your father is a workaholic and spends lots of time in the office, then help jazz it up with a load of gifts from you;  personalised gifts are a great option. Personalised prints look great pinned to a wall, personalised calendars can keep him organized and personalised mugs are essential for that daily cup of tea, however, there are other, classier sorts of personalised gifts too:

Engraved gifts

Engraved gifts are brilliant for dads because they are usually useful and if taken good care of last a lifetime. An engraved tankard or whiskey glass will remind him you love him every time he has his favorite drink, for example, whilst an engraved travel clock could wake him up on business trips. If his pockets are filled with spare changes and he sounds like a money box, then why not get him an engraved money box, it could be a wonderful gift and stop people from hearing him coming!

Do not forget that you can make your gift even more special by adding little details such as a note inside the cover of a book or a small comment on a gift tag. What you write inside a card can be as important as what he sees on the cover! My dad and have a special song; “Save the last dance for me” – it’s our father-daughter song. He had a gift made for me a while a go which said that on it. It’s possible my favourite gift he has ever given me. Simple yet so very sentimental.

If you want to get him something a little bit special then there is also personalised champagne, this is a simple yet stylish gift. It’ll also remind your dad of when you were younger and you used to make him a gift for Father’s Day. The idea of making a personalised champagne label seems pretty simple and it is. All you really need to do is upload a picture of you and your dad and then add a unique message. Kind of like the “Save the last dance for me” message that I mentioned above. If you don’t fancy being too creative and making your own personalised champagne label, then there is always the possibility of using one of our personalised champagne labels or even designing an engraved champagne gift. Those are my personal favourite, I just think they look amazing. So classy and beautiful.

I am also quite partial to engraved champagne flutes, I think they go perfectly with either a bottle of labelled personalised champagne or engraved champagne. You could get a bottle of brand champagne and not personalise it at all and then get a pair of engraved champagne flutes to complete the gift. They too are simple, yet I’m 100% your dad will LOVE them.

Choosing The Right Gift For Your Dad

Choosing Father’s Day Gifts comes down to several fundamental things, how much you want to spend, where your dad’s interests lie and the impression you want to make. The message which you want to give your father could be gratitude, love or even an apology (if you do not spend enough time with him, as is the case with this writer!) so make sure you work out how much you want to spend, what his hobbies or interests are and how you would like him to feel.

Then search for gifts that are in the right price range, connected to his interests and convey the right message. It is so much easier to search for gifts online than in real shops because you can narrow down your search with a few clicks. If you get stuck when you are trying to think of something to write in the card you might like to ask yourself some questions. What are you most grateful for this year? What did he teach you growing up which has been really valuable? Do you have any funny memories to remind him about to make him laugh?

Dad’s Deserve Nice Presents Too!

Friday, May 21st, 2010

I was watching Sky Sports last night with my dad and the cricket match between West Indies V South Africa was on. We’re both very into our cricket so when the West Indies needed 3 runs to win from one ball, all we were doing was shouting “four… four… just hit a four” at the TV. It was all very tense… but then they only got one run and lost. We were saddened. Especially my dad who is a big West Indies fan. This got me thinking back to Father’s Day. An odd association perhaps but Father’s Day is just around the corner and I’m stuck on the kind of gift I should get him. While spending time with him (this is should be the case for any of you, when you spend time with your pops) I could get ideas of what he might want. So sitting watching the cricket was a perfect time for me to consider what to get him for Father’s Day. If I am going to buy him something then isn’t the best kind of gift something that he is interested in, and wouldn’t it be even better if I got him a gift where I could share it with him too. So not only is he getting a good gift for Father’s Day to show him how much I appreciate him, he’s also getting to spend time with his daughter. On the theme of cricket I’m guessing you already know what I am planning to get him….. if not, well… ‘tickets to a cricket match’. With summer well and truly here with this “week” of heat, I know there are going to be a number of matches available for us to go and watch.

I definitely think that if you are planning on getting a gift for your dad this Father’s Day then you should put some thought into it. Don’t just get him something because you know that you’re expected too… he’s not going to appreciate it. He’ll know you’ve put no effort into it. So what you should do is start thinking about Father’s Day early and actually get him something good.

If you are really stuck for an idea then why not give personalised champagne a go. I know I harp on about this particular gift, but that’s because I know whether you choose Design Your Own Champagne, Our Labelled Champagne or a bottle of engraved champagne you can be sure that this gift will be a hit. If you choose to design your own label then you can personalise the champagne with a photo of you and your dad. It could be a photo of anything. If I was designing the label then I would probably use a photo of me and my dad from an airshow. He used to be in the air force and he likes to take me along to the air shows and explain to me how aeroplanes work. So yes, that’s what you should do – pick a picture that has good memories and make something special with it, we all know what I’m going to recommend – personalised champagne.

If you decide that you do want a personalised champagne bottle then below are a couple of verses you could you:

He who is taught to live upon little owes more to his father’s wisdom than he who has a great deal left him does to his father’s care.
Fathers Day Quote by: William Penn

By the time a man realizes that maybe his father was right, he usually has a son who thinks he’s wrong.
Fathers Day Quote by: Charles Wadworth

Small boys become big men through the influence of big men who care about small boys.
Fathers Day Quote by: Unknown

Sherman made the terrible discovery that men make about their fathers sooner or later…
Fathers Day Quote by: Tom Wolfe, The Bonfire of the Vanities

When Charles first saw our child Mary, he said all the proper things for a new father. He looked upon the poor little red thing and blurted, “She’s more beautiful than the Brooklyn Bridge.”
Fathers Day Quote by: Helen Hayes

It is a wise father that knows his own child.
Fathers Day Quote by: William Shakespeare

The father who does not teach his son his duties is equally guilty with the son who neglects them.
Fathers Day Quote by: Confucius

Fathers, like mothers, are not born. Men grow into fathers and fathering is a very important stage in their development.
Fathers Day Quote by: David Gottesman

I cannot think of any need in childhood as strong as the need for a father’s protection.
Fathers Day Quote by: Sigmund Freud

When a father gives to his son, both laugh; when a son gives to his father, both cry.
Fathers Day Quote by: Jewish Proverb

I have never been a material girl. My father always told me never to love anything that cannot love you back.
Fathers Day Quote by: Imelda Marcos

You fathers will understand. You have a little girl. She looks up to you. You’re her oracle. You’re her hero. And then the day comes when she gets her first permanent wave and goes to her first real party, and from that day on, you’re in a constant state of panic.
Fathers Day Quote by: Stanley T. Banks in the movie ‘Father of the Bride’

There must always be a struggle between a father and son, while one aims at power and the other at independence.
Fathers Day Quote by: Samuel Johnson

My son, a perfect little boy of five years and three months, had ended his earthly life. You can never sympathize with me; you can never know how much of me such a young child can take away. A few weeks ago I accounted myself a very rich man, and now the poorest of all.
Fathers Day Quote by: Ralph Waldo Emerson, on the death of his son

A man never stands as tall as when he kneels to help a child.
Fathers Day Quote by: Knights of Pythagoras

Dear Dad,
For you are the one,
For you are the one God counted on
For you are the one God counted on while sending me to this world
For you are the one God counted on while sending me to this world, for he
Knew I’ll always need someone to talk to when no one is there for me!
Love you dad!

Daddy,
We wish we could tell you Daddy,
that how much you mean to us….
We have no words to say about
how much we appreciate you…
how much we admire you…
how much we thank you
for everything you’ve done.
We love you so much Daddy…
Happy Father’s Day

My dad and I-we think alike,
He knows just what I mean
Before I even say a word
He reads well in between.

My dad and I-we like to fish
Or build a model plane,

Or fix a broken chair or two
Or just a windowpane.

My dad and I-we know the score
Of every single game;
Sometimes he’s really busy, too
But he takes me just the same.

My dad and I-we go swimming too,
Each year and sometimes twice.
My dad and I-we do everything,

My dad-he’s really nice.
Happy Father’s Day

So get thinking, you’ve got time, but make sure you make your dad feel special!

Blueberry muffin breakfast for Father's Day

This year Father’s Day falls on the 20th June 2010. So there is just over a month to go before we need to start panicking about the gift that we are going to get our dads. But sometimes I feel that dad’s are a little overlooked. If you take Mother’s Day for example I always feel like people make more of a fuss on this day, like taking their mum out for a meal or to a spa. But what about our daddy’s? – how can we make them feel special on Father’s Day?

People often start their preparation of Father’s Day in advance. A lot of school help children make beautiful hand made cards with inspirational quotations to express their love towards their dearest dad. Older kids who live far from their parents often feel like spending that day with their dad. Hence, Father’s Day can also be termed as an occasion for reunion.

In this era of commercialization, Father’s Day has been commercialized to a large extent. Retailers who specialise in the gift market (sadly us included) start campaigning days before the commencement of Father’s Day often coming up with a range of Father’s Day specific gifts to help you decide what you should get your dad. The most advertised gift options includes greeting cards, neckties, tool kits and gourmet gift baskets. According to one camp of  people, commercialization of the day helps in spreading awareness about Father’s Day while some critics feel that extensive commercialization has made the celebration of this occasion a mere formality in many families.

Here are a few gift ideas for your Dad:

Trendy Dads - most kids don’t think their dad’s are trendy though, which is a shame.
If your dad is hip and happening and a guy who loves to carry the latest style statement, then a wonderful idea would be to gift him a pair of cool sunglasses – a pair of Oakley’s perhaps…. well I know my dad would like that, he’s majorly into skiing. He might have  some already but you can never have enough sunglasses and I’m sure he would welcome another pair with a warm smile, especially if they are the new pair for this season. Perfumes and Deodorants can also be given thought.

Sporty Dads - most dad’s like sports, whether it’s football or cricket… you’ll hit the jackpot with this kind of gift.
Sporty dads are going to love a Father’s Day gift that enhances their passion for fun and sports. Any gift that goes with his favourite sport is perfect. Golf, cricket or tennis set would be a nice idea. If he loves indoor games you may go in for premium chess or cards set or anything else like Dartboards or scrabble based on his choice. However if you are really generous then why not get him tickets to a game – tennis season starts soon… see if you can score a pair of tickets for Wimbledon?

Dads Who Love Books
If your dad loves to spend time in books there can be no better idea than to gift him a nice hard bound book, or perhaps a membership to a local book club. Keep your dad’s taste in mind when you are choosing a book for him though – remember he’s the one who is going to be reading it… On the occasion of Father’s Day you may also select books which reflect on the beautiful relationship shared between a father and a child.

Tech Savvy Dads
There are a lot of options in the market for dads who love to adopt latest and trendiest in technology – the new iPad has just come out! But if that is out of your price range then what about an iPod, or if he has one of those then maybe a docking station or something he could use to manage his music. On the higher end you may go in for camera, camcorders, lap tops and DVDs. Other ideas in this category include electronic shavers, massagers or exercise equipment. Though if he has a gym membership then don’t worry about the exercise equipment, he probably won’t use it.

Clothes and Accessories

These are traditional yet always appreciated. You may like to buy a formal shirt, a casual T-Shirt or a pair of trousers. Accessories that may be gifted on Father’s Day include belts, wallets, portfolio bags, cuff-links and of course ties!

Movie or Theatre Tickets

Book tickets for dad’s favourite movie with just mum or the whole family included. Alternatively you may get him a DVD of his favorite movies or albums. A picnic or a trip to amusement park can also work as a wonderful Father’s Day Gift Idea.

Unusual Gifts
If you want to try something a bit different then why not try a bottle of personalised champagne, it’s a simple yet unique gift that any dad would love. You can design your own champagne label with a picture of you and your dad or you could get a bottle of engraved champagne, with that you could write a special message that means something to you and your dad. For my birthday my dad had a photo frame made for me.. on it he had written “Save the Last Dance For Me” – that’s our song. So I know that if I got my dad personalised champagne he would be really pleased with it because he likes that sort of stuff.

So there are a few ideas about how you can make Father’s Day really special this year!
