Graduates!
Have you started to think about what you are going to give this year as a graduation gift? In fact do you know anyone that is graduating? In America graduation is a big deal, whether it’s graduating from high school or college – a big fuss is made over this rite of passage. In the UK, we celebrate graduation usually after someone has obtained a degree, now there will be a lot of people who will have completed their exams over the past few months and finished their final years. Results are looming and soon they will be finding out whether all their hard work has paid off. Yes, I am sure that they have spent many a day (and night) living the high life and partying to all hours of the morning, but you can’t get good grades in a degree if you don’t put the work in. A lot of time and effort has to be put into your personal study and research in order to get the best out of a degree. I know that when I completed my degree I was extremely proud, I did it while working full time and through the open university and so my graduation was very important to me. I also hoped that my family would feel as proud as I was about the achievement as I was the first person in our family to achieve a degree. And you know what, I think they were. I was really spoiled in relation to my degree… before graduation, when the results came and they found out how well I had done.. I was taken out for dinner, as well as taken on a shopping spree with my mum! That was just the start of my graduation gifts, on the big day itself after all the pomp and ceremony had taken place, it was time to receive some more graduation gifts… my dad had had two engraved frames made for me, one for my graduation photo and one for my graduation certificate. I could tell how proud he was of his daughter.
I do believe that when parents see their children suceed in life, it makes them swell with pride. They know that their kids will be alright because first they have the ability to know what it means to “finish” something. A lot of students drop out of university because they think it’s too hard or because they have chosen the wrong course, they drop out with the intention of going back and starting a new course in the new academic year. But they don’t. They don’t finish what they started. It’s an important quality in a person to be able to finish something, the completion of a degree is just that… the finish of something difficult with a great reward at the end!
Now when it comes to celebrating graduation, there is the usual tradition amongst the students to finally let their hair down and party hard before they head out in to the harsh realities of life. However for those of us who are not fellow students but who still want to show our pride at this new graduates success, we can also get involved by giving a graduation gift!
There are a number of gifts that you could give as a graduation gift, like I said earlier my parents took me out for dinner and on a shopping spree and my dad had two engraved frames for my graduation photo and certificate made as gifts. Now I do believe an engraved frame is a great idea, the fun part about graduation is getting dressed up in the graduation robe and cap and posing for that infamous photo of throwing your cap in the air! You’ll need somewhere to display these photos! But if you want to get something a little less practical and something that screams celebration then a bottle of champagne would be the perfect choice. What says “let’s celebrate” more than a bottle of bubbly? Now obviously I would advocate the personalised champagne or engraved champagne variety, quite simply because it’s that extra bit special. Though there is nothing at all wrong with giving a bottle of Moet et Chandon and a gift card! But a bit of personality doesn’t cost that much and certainly adds value to the gift that you give. I’m sure that lucky recipient will be quite happy though whichever gift you choose to give them as a graduation gift.
Graduation is an important part of a person’s life. It’s the point that all their hard work comes together, pays off and gets recognised. Join in a celebrate with them and show them how proud you are of their achievement.
