Engraved Port Bottle Presents
In the early 1700’s we became a nation of port wine drinkers. It has become ingrained in our culture as a gentleman’s drink and a Christmas tipple. British tradition dictates the decanter should be passed left and never touch the table.
In 1785 when the Bishop of Norwich dined at Christ’s College, he kept the decanter, possibly believing it was his personal bottle. Now, when someone doesn’t pass the port to port (left), they are reminded with “Do you know the Bishop of Norwich?” If they don’t understand, it’s followed with "He's a terribly good chap, but he always forgets to pass the port”.
Corked bottles should be stored on their side in a cool, dry place while stoppered are kept upright. It is ideally served at 15-20°C. As a dessert wine, it is often paired with cheese, nuts or chocolate.
